Our Butterfly

David found a cocoon on the rock wall a few days ago. We brought it inside in a jar to watch it. This beauty made it's debut this morning! It took about 6 hours or so for it to get out of the cocoon, spread out it's wings and take flight. The kids loved watching it. We looked it up online and it is an Eastern tiger swallowtail, Papilio glaucus. However, it is usually not found in this area of Texas as it likes deciduous forest areas. We learn something new around here every day!

How neat that you found a butterfly cocoon. You tried to take one home from Missouri but now it turned out that you got one in El Paso! I am enjoying your blog. Pat
